This month the third annual US AIR GUITAR CHAMPIONSHIPS are kicking off the search for America's next air guitar hero. Regional heats will be held in New York, Chicago, Asheville, Boston, Denver, Austin, Minneapolis and Los Angeles, with the seven regional winners competing at the Key Club in Los Angeles, CA on July 14 for the American crown. Doors open at 7 PM and tickets are $12.00 in advance and $15.00 at the door. Tickets are available by calling 310-274-5800 or by going to www.ticketmaster.com. This year's competition builds on the excitement of last two years - both producing the World Champion Air Guitarist. In the first ever national Air Guitar competition, Brooklyn native David "C. Diddy" Jung captured the US title and went on to compete for and win the world title as the first ever US entrant in the World Air Guitar Championships. "C- Diddy's" protege MiRi "SonyK-Rok" Park won the New York regional, US, and World title the following year. "We set the bar high by taking the world title in the first year of US competition," said producer Jane Lipsitz. "But it's really not so surprising when you consider that the United States is the true home of guitar rock." Fellow producer Cedric Devitt added, "There are some serious contenders coming out to challenge the title. We expect the competition to be fierce and the talent to be world-class." The first annual US Air Guitar Championships in New York and Los Angeles drew sell-out crowds and enormous TV, radio and print coverage including CNN, Newsweek, CBS, ABC, MSNBC, Fox News, Howard Stern, The Los Angeles Times, Rolling Stone, ESPN, NPR, the BBC and many more. In addition, for the second year, the events were recorded for the official US Air Guitar documentary project. The documentary was produced by Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz of Magical Elves Inc., executive producers of HBO's Project Greenlight and NBC's Last Comic Standing. Contestants perform for one minute to a song of their choice and are judged on a combination of technical prowess, stage presence and "airness". "What we mean by that," said Devitt, "is really that elusive quality of transcending the imitation of an art form - ie playing guitar - and creating a new art form - air guitar." The 2005 US Air Guitar Champion will move on to the Air Guitar World Championships, held every August in Northern Finland. Currently in it's ninth year, the Air Guitar World Championships brings together the best air guitarists in the world for a fierce battle of national pride and rock and roll style. Currently, there are official national championships in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Austria, Belgium, The Netherlands, Norway, Finland and France, with more countries participating every year. The winner of the US Air Guitar Championships receives a free trip (airfare and four nights lodging) to the Air Guitar World Championships, held in Oulu, Finland in late August.

Ive been to one of these air guitar shows. It is on a par with cow pat throwing, Finish wife carrying races, japanese snowball wars, and the world boiled egg eating champoinships.

'Air guitar' is a weird coinage... There is no
guitar, as such; and people aren't really doing
anything with air except twiddling their fingers
through it. Then again, I'm crap at playing guitar
(I'm more your strummer type) - so what's the prize? [img]wink.gif[/img]

Would you believe that the Cheese Rolling thing is famous here in Sweden? Whenever a conversation turns to sport or field games, someone asks me about that. They think we have a league of Cheese rolling teams up and down the country.
